Carl L. Brodt, C.M.A., Berkeley

CARL BRODT first became active on school choice when he was the Berkeley coordinator for Parents for Educational Choice during the Prop. 174 campaign. After the election, he served for nearly two years as secretary of the Dunfey Group, which sought unsuccessfully to prepare another education reform initiative for the 1998 ballot. He also served as treasurer for Deborah Wright, another strong school choice activist, in her congressional races in 1994 and 1996, and her state senate race in 1998. From 1995 to 1999 he served on California's Republican State Central Committee.

His formidable debating skills took shape during his high school and college years. He received a full-tuition scholarship for debating during his last three years at Santa Clara University, where he majored in political science and received awards for his achievements in that subject and in forensics. Subsequently he earned masters degrees in international studies and business administration at Claremont Graduate School, and he became a Certified Management Accountant in 1985.

A financial manager by profession, Carl began his career as a financial analyst and planner for McCulloch Corporation in Los Angeles and as principal financial analyst for the Federal Reserve Bank in San Francisco. He was also a part-tirne instructor at the University of La Verne in La Verne, California, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in strategic planning, managerial accounting, and corporate finance.

He eventually joined Union Bank of California, where he has had a succession of vice presidencies in various divisions covering a broad spectrum of banking activities. He is currently Vice President of Finance and Administration in San Francisco, where, among other things, he acts as a group financial manager, portfolio risk analyst, managerial consultant, data processing coordinator, and systems analyst. He has also acted as group controller of a loan/real estate portfolio that has ranged up to $1.3 billion in value.

His financial expertise has also been applied in higher spheres. He has been a member and officer of Lutheran church councils in Inglewood and Berkeley, bringing sound fiscal management to their affairs.

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, to a mobile Air Force family, Carl attended ten different elementary and secondary schools (nine public, one private). His mother was a public school teacher and school district supervisor, and worked for the California Commission for Teacher Preparation and Licensing (he worked there himself one summer). He now lives in Berkeley with his wife, Teofista. In their spare time they enjoy ballroom dancing.
